Shure 545SD Classic Unidyne Instrument Microphone Review

Today we continue having a look at “Classic” line microphones by Shure and the next one is more instrumental. The SM57, rather well known modern mic, is based on Shure 545SD. The origins of this mic took place in 60th, it was time when people fall in love with “dirty” sound mics once again and harmonicas became really popular. So meet good old star from great period of time, who was produced in twenty first century so you could enjoy sounds your parents enjoyed in modern conditions. Let’s get straight to the specs.

Shure 545SD Overall Build & Features

External design of this mic is really minimalistic and simple.  No buttons, no knobs, nothing but monolithic structure which does its job great. Don’t be afraid if it falls on a floor, this chrome plated casting and steel screen will prevent damage (but, actually, we don’t recommend you throw it on the floor on purpose). The overall look is not that elegant end beautiful, as, for example, 55SH is, and it is like dark horse with great performance.

Some words about design features. Firstly, the on/off switch. It was engineered for two purposes. Just to be there and be there absolutely unnoticeable and quite. It is based on magnetic technology, to lock it in on position you will have to remove lock plate and turn it and then reassemble screw.

You can also change microphone impedance. Microphone rating impedance is 150Ω ohms (250Ω ohms actual) for connection to microphone inputs rated at 19 to 300Ω ohms and “High” for connection to high-impedance microphone inputs. How to change mic impedance you can find in user guide from package bundle.

Swivel adapter from package bundle can be adjusted through 90 degrees. Vertical, horizontal position – wherever you want, and of course there are huge amount of different stands and boom arms for it (5/8 -27 thread). Shure brand also has optional accessories for 545SD. For example, A2WS-BLK Black Locking Foam Windscreen is perfect solution to reduce unwanted breath / wind noise, A26M Dual Microphone Mount allows to place two microphones on one stand – this function can be useful if you want to capture sound on two different microphones at same position.

Sound Quality

Speaking the truth, this mic is good choice not only for musicians. It may be used in halls, lectoriums and even in churches. Yeah, we realize that the sound of this mic is a bit harp, raw, but other technical features as dual impedance and unified connector gives you ability to almost neutralize this tinge in sound, make it almost clear, if you want. Cardioid polar pattern as usual eliminated unwanted noises.

Shure 545SD vs Shure SM57

Comparing the microphones should be noted that they are similar in overall build and features. They have same Unidyne III microphone element, cardioid polar pattern, similar design & and price range. Both microphones have perfect sound quality, but Shure 545SD more saturated with harmonics because of frequency response (you can see a slight difference in the range from 4000Hz to 12000Hz on pictures from our comparison table), while Shure SM57 rawer and limited as you can hear in our audio example. Distinctive features of the microphone Shure 575SD are built-in on/off magnetic switch and dual adjustable impedance, which actually are not present in the Shure SM57. Finally, we want to say that both microphones perfectly cope with the tasks of recording acoustic & amplified instruments, vocals. We can’t accurately answer the question which is better, it’s like to answer the question “which is better, green or blue?” Some people like green, some people like blue.

Final Verdict

This microphone is for people who do. No matter what their task is: productive lecture, great album, inspiring speech. An overall engineer concept is based on productivity and simplicity, but on the other side it allows you set the sound as you want. Add an impeccable quality of Shure and really good price and you will realize that it is really great choice for all you purposes.
