Shure MV5 Digital Condenser Microphone Review

We have already done reviews on some mics from the product line called “MOTIV Digital Microphones” and it is necessary to repeat that this line have already proved that it is possible to engineer microphones which are considered as portable devices and at the same time quality of its recordings can almost be compared with studio ones. Today we are taking a look at the elder brother in as whole line, it is called Shure Motiv MV5. This is also portable mic with USB connector, so you will be able to use it even with your mobile phone, but this particular model is meant to be used with PC. This little spherical example of a good mic also has 3,5 jack connector, so you will be able to monitor your records in real time and let’s not forget about high level (as usual) design of this sweet device. All these features will be covered soon, but let’s start with Shure MV5 specifications.

Design

So we are going to start with design. Shure specialists once again proved that they are totally professionals, moreover professionals with good taste. This little ball is very easy to transport and easy to use (this is especially handy for people, who use with portable devices more frequently). You can put it wherever you want to work with it. Unfortunately, the case is not included in set, so it will be necessary to buy something to put it in if you are going to transport it somewhere. The shell looks simple, but elegant and it is hard to tell the material (actually mostly plastic), because it does not seem cheap at a glance.

This model is available in two colors: Gray with black foam and Black with red foam. The only accessory that you can purchase in addition to this microphone – Blue Ringer Universal Shockmount for ball microphones (great solution if you want to attach this microphone to floor microphone stand or boom arm).

Shure MV5 Gray Overall Build and Features

Now let’s talk more about its usability. The Build of the microphone provides full functionality for comfortable use, the only thing we did not like – it’s buttons on the rear panel (this is a little awkward), but this arrangement is conditioned by the shape ball design of this mic. On the rear panel you can find mute & mode switch buttons, volume level adjustment wheel, 3.5 jack output for monitoring your recording, 3 DSP modes led indication. The stand, which comes with it in set, is fully metal and looks like it is one and the only thing you need with MV5. This stand is stable and it will be great addition for podcasters, cybersportsmen and mediocre PC users. The hatch is simple but solid.

We have already written a lot about an official application for Shure portable mics, which is called ShurePlus MOTIV Mobile Recording App and it allows you to change some sets, such as bit depth, sample rate, stereo width. You will also be able to change DSP modes, choose formats of your recordings and change some settings of limiter equalizer and compressor. You even will be able to save your recordings as videos on your camera roll. This app is a lifesaver to people who want to get maximum of quality using only portable devices as IPhone and IPad.

So, to the most important things. First of all, let us repeat another time that the statement that microphone like this (and even Blue Yeti) are able to record studio quality files is unreasonable, that is why in intro we wrote ’almost can be compared’. Speaking the truth, you can compare everything you want, the problem is that it makes no sense. So from that point we can assume you that the quality of this USB microphone is pretty good. Coming in at a maximum sample rate of 24bit / 48kHz, it will be more than enough for everyone, except professionals. The sound is quite soft and three installed DSP modes (Voice / Instrumental / Flat) makes this mic even more desirable purchase due to its flexibility. This thing does not even need pop filter if you are not move your mouth super closely to it.

Shure MV5 vs Blue Snowball

Comparing Shure MV5 & Blue Snowball we would like to note that both microphones have quite a number of differences, despite the fact that they belong to the same class of USB desktop microphones. Let’s start with a comparison of the design; it would be noted that Blue Snowball looks more attractive, thanks to the metal housing and heavy weight of 460g; Shure MV5 weighs only 90g + 160g weight of stand, also Snowball is available in 8 colors to choose from, while Shure MV5 has two color schemes. Package bundle of both microphones is practically the same, you’ll see directly the mic and desktop stand in the box. The main advantage of Shure microphone that you can connect it to any iOS device by lightning cable as it supports Apple MFI certification, while this possibility does not exist in Blue Snowball. The quality of sound is a little warmer and richer in Shure MV5, we think this is due to the fact that Shure records audio at a higher Bit Depth / Sample Rate – 24bit / 48kHz. Unfortunately, Blue Snowball records audio only in 16bit / 44kHz. Blue Snowball has one distinguishing feature – you can set one of 3 polar patterns: cardioid, omnidirectional, cardioid with -10dB pad, while Shure has just cardioid polar pattern. Also it is worth mentioning that Shure microphone has real time monitoring feature via 3.5mm jack for your headphones, then Shure has 3DSP presets (Voice, Instrument, Flat). The interface of the microphone from Shure is much more convenient because all buttons such as gain adjustment, the mute and the choice of three DSP presets are located on the body, while the Blue microphone has only polar pattern selection button. Cost of the microphones is slightly different, Shure MV5 is more expensive than Blue Snowball. If you want to know more about features & specs of Blue Snowball you can check our review on this microphone or find some information in our comparison table.
